Broken flakes are cut from cakes or plugs into irregular pieces of approximately 1/8” in size. It is very easy to rub this tobacco out into a texture like that of Ribbon if so desired, but it can also be crushed, folded, or smoked without further preparation. With a little care in storage, this tobacco will keep well, and can be cellared or aged for long periods of time.

Curly Cut 绳切

Curly Cut refers to thin slices of tobacco cut from twisted “Rope” tobacco, which take an almost thin coin-like appearance. Curly Cut is much like Flake tobacco, only differing in shape and slightly in thickness, and is sometimes referred to as a type of flake. It can be prepared for smoking in the same way as a traditional Flake, by either folding, crushing, or rubbing it out to a desirable texture for smoking.

绳切主要是由绳草切成的片，尺寸有大有小，像硬币一样。绳切和砖切类似，尺寸和形状不太一样，是切片的一个种类。装填和切片类似，揉碎或直接装填。Curly cut, disk, coin, spun-cut绳切、硬币、牛眼等基本都是指这一类的草。有的绳草是中心和外圈颜色不一样，有的相对比较均匀，看各家处理方式。

Flake 切片

Flakes, or “slices” are cut from compressed cakes such as Plug, into slices, which are typically rectangular in shape but can be somewhat oddly or loosely shaped as well. Flakes keep somewhat well after opening, and are quite easy to prepare for smoking. Flake can either be folded and stuffed into the smoking chamber, or rubbed out to a consistency similar to that of Ribbon or Shag cut.

Plug 烟砖 Cake 烟块

Plugs are square or rectangular bars cut from tobacco that has been layered, heated, and pressed. They keep well since they do not allow much air exchange. Plugs must be sliced, and either folded or rubbed out for smoking. It’s important to cut “against the grain” of the tobacco layers, since each layer is a different type of tobacco, and it helps achieve a properly smokable texture.

烟砖Plugs主要是指从整片压制草块切下来的整块的烟砖，每层烟草是相对完整的大片，相对比较容易储存，水分相对不容易挥发。烟砖必须要自行切片、拆散或揉搓再进行装填，因为在制作过程中每一层的烟草有可能会不同，所以在自行切片时务必按断面切割，以便品尝到完成的味道。

烟块Cake相对于Plugs有一点不同，他是将已经裁切成细烟丝后的烟草，经过高压压制重新压制成砖，相对于Plugs来说在装填前相对容易处理，一般不需要再自行裁切。

Ribbon 烟丝

Ribbon cut tobacco is tobacco that is mechanically cut from cakes or plugs into thin strands of about 1/16”. It will not keep very well for long periods of time after the tin or bag is opened, unless careful precautions are taken to store it properly. Ribbon tobacco does not need any preparation before smoking; it can simply be stuffed into the bowl and smoked.

丝带状烟丝是从烟砖或烟块自动切割下来后揉碎好的成品，非常普遍。开罐后不容易保存，需要密封。装填前一般不需要再进行二次处理可以直接装填，相对比较省事。

Rope 绳草

Rope tobacco is not cut, but rather spun into thick cords usually about 1” in diameter, and sold in different lengths. This is typically considered a “bulk” tobacco. It is a fairly uncommon method of preparation, but Rope is quite compact and stores very well, much like Plug tobacco. For smoking, Rope must be cut into slices and either folded or rubbed to the desired texture.

绳草是一种相对原始的形态，除两端外不进行任何切割，又叫做Lanyard，通常以不通长度配合重量进行出售，常见于很多散装烟草。这种售卖方式比较原始，并不常见，相当紧凑并容易储存，和烟砖类似。装斗之前必须要自行裁切，相对比较麻烦。

Shag 细烟丝

Similar to Ribbon cut, Shag cut tobacco is also cut mechanically into strands, but is even finer in texture than Ribbon. Shag tobacco is very delicate, and much like Ribbon, it can be smoked straight from the tin without preparation. Once a tin or bag of Shag tobacco is opened, it needs to be stored in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out, which it will otherwise quickly do.

和烟丝Ribbon类似，为精选级的细烟丝，制作方法和Ribbon类似，但相对来说更加纯净，弹性更好一些。不容易保存，非常容易干，开罐后需要密封保存。装填和Ribbon一样，基本稍微抓一抓就可以装斗了。
